Ever get delightfully surprised by the music? First I intro the topic over the always surprising bass playing of Victor Wooten (BP from the Flektones). Who is Gillian Welch? An explanation and an example of her most excellent standard stuff , then the surprise . . . I caught her live in Colorado playing a psychedelic anthem from the 60s. For the first time. And she and David Rawlings kicked its butt considering it is just 2 acoustic guitars and voice. Next act: Sometimes a surprise is how an incredible commitment to style by a singer transforms a song you thought you knew. Witness what Mary McCaslin does to a Motown top 40 tune. Hey . . . I am already at the 17 minute mark . . . Lets wrap this show! Please buy the full commercial versions of the music you hear on this little educational effort of mine.

    DSG,

good cast. Nice theme, which I'm sure you could do more with, as you say. Also nice to see you appear in my rss more regularly now. Glad to see that things have settled down again with you. Take care,

    Bruce

Well - my guess was Somebody to Love - even before the SF reference. Missed it by that much. As usual a great show and a cameo by the murthoid who seemed to be a bit faint.

    Cheers,

Well, you blew my mind. Never figured Gillian to be so slick. Outstanding.

yeah, surprises from the seemingly familiar are rather exciting and fulfilling, eh?... delightfully fills in what can easily become empty and meaningless.
i think it must be the same for singers, musicians, et.al., too. always performing what the crowd expects to hear must make one feel like a human jukebox after awhile.

btw, i immediately thought of the song that Welsh & Rawlings did (don't wanna give away too much here in comments for those who might not have listened, yet).... musta been the descriptor you used for the S.F. band :) hmmmm, wonder if Gillian surprised herself with that mighty 'high'-ly done 1st time performance?

HEY! So glad everyone is diggin that little number - they really aced it. And did Gillian like it?? - you should have seen her face when 6 or 7000 of us out in the field in front of the stage went nuts. . . She knew they connected on that one.

Oh, I get it now. Great podcast, you are on a roll. We say Gillian Welsh about a year and a half ago at the PNC Bank Arts Center .. what a great act.
